The unit of Mathematical Sciences has been designed to expose students to the basic fields of specialization in Mathematical Sciences with emphasis on areas of contemporary interest in the modern world. The Department offers two degree programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Science or higher degrees in Mathematics and Statistics.
The programme prepares the student to make meaningful contributions in all forms of professional activities in which they may become engaged.

(i) B.Sc. Mathematics

PRORAMME PHILOSOPHY


The programmes are designed to produce competent students with adequate knowledge in all branches of Mathematics (Pure or Applied) with focus on application in solving real life and industrial problems to meet technical and practical needs of the nation.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES


The objectives of the Department are as follows:
a. To develop and give academic and professional training in all areas of Mathematics and Statistics for the development of the latent power of thinking in individuals.
b. To provide and promote sound basic practical and theoretical training in Mathematics and Statistics as a foundation for technological development in Nigeria.
c. To identify the basic scientific and technological problems in the areas of Mathematics and Statistics and find appropriate solutions to them.
d. To train students to be able to adequately apply Information Technology to solve real-life problems in the areas of Agriculture, Commerce, Medicine, and other disciplines that require the knowledge of Mathematics and Statistics.
e. To give Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) for the purpose of self-employment and job placements in the industry for self-actualization.
f. To develop and offer academic and professional programmes as a foundation for Post Graduate Studies in Mathematics, Statistics and related disciplines.
g. To offer service courses in Mathematics and Statistics to other departments in the University.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS


a. UTME

Five ‘O’ Level Credits including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry plus one other science subject.
UTME SUBJECTS: English, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

b. DIRECT ENTRY:


(i) Two “A” Level passes in Mathematics and any other science subject along with O’ Level requirements for UME admission
(ii) NCE with at least Merit Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry or Computer along with O’ Level requirements
(iii) OND with at least upper credit along with along with O’ Level requirements for UME admission.

PROGRAMME DURATION


The duration of the programme is four years.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS


ll the courses indicated in each of the tables given are core and required for B.Sc. degree in Mathematics. In addition to the core required courses, students however have the option of registering for elective courses run by other departments of the University.
